Hidden Gems

A few weeks ago I wrote about my 'meh' products. These were products that, while weren't bad, were uninspiring and I didn't find myself reaching for them. Today, I wanted to balance things out a little bit and chat about some hidden gems; products that I didn't expect much from but, have since become mainstays in my collection, most of which I reach for daily.
NYX Butt Naked Palette* - As a self-confessed make-up snob, I was definitely a bit meh when a sample of this palette arrived to my house. I didn't consider it possible that NYX shadows could hold their own against the likes of NARS, LORAC and MAC, all of which I love and rate highly. Hands up - I was wrong. These shadows are beautifully buttery and pigmented and pop them in a palette alongside any of the higher end ones and I guarantee you won't be able to tell the difference.

Maybelline Color Drama* - Again, I compared these on first look to the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils which I love and decided they couldn't be as good. This was wrong. Not only because the Maybelline pencils are brightly coloured, long wearing and comfortable to wear but, because they aren't trying to be like the NARS pencils at all. Where NARS are creamy, Maybelline are dry. Where NARS fades in places, Maybelline holds strong. More fool me for judging a book...

Rimmel Brow This Way - God, I love this stuff. I saw it on sale for around three quid in Boots and, having never tried a tinted brow gel, decided it was worth a punt. I didn't expect much but, I use this every single day without fail. Once I have shaped my brows with powder, I finish with this to shade the hairs and make everything look a little more natural.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Matte Nude-ist - This one will be no surprise at this stage as I have recently featured it here, here and here. However, when Dee first gave it to me and was all omgtrythisyouwilladoreit, I wasn't convinced. I featured the original Rouge Edition's as one of my meh products and, I think, for good reason. This, however, is world's apart. The perfect nude-rose shade that dries matte and lasts all day? It wasn't my Best in Beauty 2014 lip pick for no reason!

LORAC Behind the Scenes Eye Primer - Usually when I get minis with an eyeshadow palette, I chuck them in a drawer, never to be seen again. For some reason, one day, I dug this primer out from said drawer and have been using it ever since. It really pumps up the pigment of any eyeshadow and makes it last all damn day. Of course, LORAC isn't so easy to get here but, Dee has suggested that the NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base is basically the same so, I'll definitely be picking that up once this tiny tube runs out.

  1. Love the Maybelline Color Dramas with Nuxe Reve De Miel. Feck off effort, loads of pay off.

I bought Rimmel Brow this way too, and meh. I dunno. I think I like it less because I got the L'Oreal Brow Artists around the same time and that is brilliant. I feel like Rimmel is too creamy or something? Too much product, kinda bulks out the already full parts and doesn't bode well with the sparse bits.

  2. I love Brow This Way so much I just wish they'd make the brush a little smaller
