Brand Focus: MAC

I love doing these brand focus posts because it really makes me think about the pros and cons of every brand that I spend my hard-earned cash on and, perhaps, teach me to be a little bit more discerning when I come across a dud in my collection. MAC is the one brand that I have a lengthy history with, 10 years at least, and I have tried pretty much every facet of product they offer at one point or another. So, in that regard, it should have been easy to make a snap decision on what products represent the best of the best of MAC but, realistically, MAC is a very solid brand with more good products than bad so, this was a tough ask for me!

Lip products are where MAC really shines and Dee and I have said countless times over the last three years that, other lipsticks may come and go but, MAC lipsticks are forever. I must own about 30 at this point - they were one of the first make-up items I started properly obsessing over and collecting - and it is hard to pick a favourite. However, if you were walking into MAC for the first time and looking to buy a lipstick, I would say that Shy Girl, Lustering and Rebel should see everyone covered as they are all gorgeous, unique shades that fit into the general categories of nude, pink and dark.

Lip liners are a must-have for me and I have a whole jar full that I can mix and match with different lipsticks to create a super sharp, neat lip. However, MAC Lip Liners excel because a) the shade range is so vast and b) there are a few different formulas to choose from. My favourites are the Chromagraphic Pencils and Pro Longwear Lip Liners.

There was a time in my life where my make-up drawers were, quite literally, stuffed with only MAC. However, having branched out now, I wouldn't ever go back to their foundations or, for the most part, their concealers. That's not to say that MAC do bad face products. One of my favourite powders, MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, is by the brand and I always have one lurking in my drawer as a back-up because it is just so good. Similarly, MAC blushes are absolutely incredible and I have two 6-pan palettes full of them from my early days as a MAC connoisseur that I still reach for regularly. Some of my favourite shades are Melba, Prism and Plum Foolery but, the one I reach for most at the moment is the Pro Longwear Blush in Baby Don't Go - a gorgeously flattering nude.

Another area where MAC is very solid is eyeshadows. MAC eyeshadows are easily some of the best on the market and the huge shade and finish range as well as the option to create your own palette makes experimentation with make-up a possibility for the average Joe Soap. Again, I have multiple palettes full of eyeshadows, some of which don't get much love anymore but, this quad is part of my everyday make-up routine and I couldn't be without it. The shades are Vanilla, Swiss Chocolate, Quarry and Smut and basically give you the option for both warm and cool toned eye looks as well as neutral and smokey eye looks. I adore it!

MAC Paint Pots are definitely my most reached for eyeshadow bases. They are super long wearing with a reasonably good shade selection and work well as both a base and an eyeshadow in their own right. Painterly, a pink-toned nude, is definitely my most-reached for, followed closely by Indianwood; a lusciously rich bronze. I don't put a lot of money into mascara anymore as there are so many good, cheap options available now. However, MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash was in a press pack I received early last year and it even made the cut for my mascara pick of 2013! There is a full review here if you are interested.

I'd love to hear what your favourite MAC products are!

  3. So far I've only tried one mac product because I hear such bad things about their face stuff in general - I really want some shadows and lipsticks by them but for now I just have my painterly paint pot which I love and use everyday.

Lovely post - these are some of my favourite style to read especially as having such a large collection of Mac you really know what's worth getting!

  4. Love MAC eyeshadows! Woodwinked and All that Glitters are among my favourites. I also just bought the Painterly Paint Pot today after reading about it here and cannot wait to use! Working tomorrow so a full face of slap shall be plastered on. Today however was definitely a no makeup, rocking the comfy pants type of day :)
