Maybelline Holiday Sets

Is it too soon to mention Christmas? By my reckoning, it's never too soon but, I know a majority of you are in the "But, we haven't even had Halloween yet!" camp so, I apologise in advance for this post! However, these little sets from Maybelline are just too good not to share and I figured you may want to pick them up over the next few months for birthday presents or whatever so, lets just talk about them in the context of great value and great selection as opposed to being specific to the holiday season!

I feel like holiday sets from drugstore brands like Maybelline are more of an American thing (they always get the best stuff!). However, over the last few years they have been creeping more and more onto the shelves which, by my reckoning, is a great opportunity to try a few products from a brand, often at a knockdown price. For 2013, Maybelline have released two sets; one for nails and one for eyes.

Bourjois 1 Seconde Gel Nail Polish

It's taken me far too long to blog about these nail polishes, and for that I am truly sorry, because they are absolute beauties. Every new release Bourjois have put out over the last month has been a hit with us and most other bloggers - and these are no exception to the rule.

New From Maybelline: Master Duo Liner and Brow Drama

Ahhh! It's that wonderful time of year again when brands start releasing new products quicker than we can buy them. For AW13, Maybelline are coming out with some interesting products for brows and eyes that I think will appeal to a lot of you; they certainly piqued my interest!

Lancôme l'Absolu Velours Matte Effect

Despite the fact that they make my desert island foundation, Lancôme are not a brand that I would go to regularly for colour cosmetics. Their Rouge in Love lipsticks are excellent, though, and really made me sit up and pay attention when they came out last year. Now, they've also perfected the matte liquid lipstick, so I feel like it's time for me to give Lancôme their dues and tell you all how awesome this little tube is.

Take 3: Facial Moisturisers

It seems that I'm never content when it comes to skincare. I've stated my love for La Roche-Posay Hydraphase moisturiser  over and over again - yet recently, I've found myself trying out a few other daily moisturising creams just for something different, really.

None of these creams come with an in-built SPF, which used not to be my pick but I've been wearing SPF50 on top of my moisturiser since May or so, and may well just continue this through the winter with SPF30. Opinions are mixed, but it seems  that the general consensus among skincare peeps is that a separate sunscreen is the way to go, and I'm happy to do so for the sake of an extra minute in the morning.

My Face #7

I thought autumn was well and truly here and I had made my peace with the shorter days and colder weather. And then, Mother Nature suddenly decides to bestow upon us 20 degree weather, sunny days and cloudless skies, rendering my new winter boots, snuggly scarves and thick jumpers rather useless! Bearing that in mind, this installment in the My Face series was supposed to be a look at my current go-to make-up for autumn but, I guess it also works as an Indian Summer look either!

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lips

I have some weird obsession with lip balm. I can't go asleep at night without applying a balm. I have one on my work desk, one in my handbag, my car, my gym bag. Yep, it's getting out of hand and I have another lip balm love to add to the pile!

Origins Make A Difference Plus + Rejuvenating Treatment

After my success with predominantly French skincare brands over the last few years, I never really thought I'd feel the need to deviate. After my success with REN, though, I've been open to trying a few other brands.

When my skin was a mess a couple of months ago, though, I really felt like switching up my routine and ordered a few things from Debenhams when there was 10% off. This cream was one of them, and I have to say, it's very, very nice.

What I'm Wearing #6

It's been a while since I did a full-on make-up kinda post, so here we are. Guess what? I think I'm getting old, because I have calmed down a lot in make-up terms over the last year or so. Don't panic - I'm still buying the stuff by the bucketload, but I've pared down my look quite significantly for a girl who used to wear flicked eyeliner, eyeshadow and bold lipstick almost every single day. Don't get me wrong, I'll always be one for colour, but a combination of being a lot busier and changing personal tastes have taught me a few things; a) I don't need to wear quite as much makeup as I think I do, b) it is possible to just wear eyeshadow and mascara, or even just mascara alone (gasp!), and c) good eyebrows are all you need sometimes.

Beauty Shopping - Italy & Greece Edition

I'm recently back from what was easily the best holiday of my life and wanted to share a few beauty bits I got in when I was in Rome, Venice and Corfu. I didn't buy much by my normal standards but, I'm delighted with the few things I got!

I proclaimed my love for Kiko when I got back from Berlin last year so, it was top of my list when in Italy. There was a brush sale going on while I was there so, I picked up the 106 Duo Fibre Brush, the 104 Kabuki and the 204 Angled Brush. These were all 50% off and the dearest was the kabuki at just €8. It is just as soft and good as the MAC 182 kabuki which costs €50. Also, a quick note on the 204 Angled Brush; this is the best brush for eyebrows. Hands down. And I'm only sorry I didn't realise it before I left the shop because I would have brought one back for everyone in the audience, it's that good!

Splurge/Save: Mascara

Now, you can take these Splurge/Save posts to mean whatever you like; a subtle message that you don't always have to empty your bank account to get good beauty products, an offering of cheaper alternatives to luxury products or just an honest opinion on two products that do the same thing but, suit different budgets. I intend for it to be the third option; a quick rundown of products that I love and giving you options for how to achieve them.

So, for this installment, we'll be looking at mascaras! I'm a mascara junkie and have multiple tubes on the go at any one time. However, I noticed that, for everyday wear, I have been favouring two in particular; MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash* and Maybelline The Mega Plush Volum'Express*, mainly for the natural, soft look they give lashes.

The Body Shop Honeymania

Out this month from The Body Shop is a new scent range - Honeymania is a series of products with Community Fair Trade honey from Ethiopia. Honey can be a bit of a tricky, heady scent but, overall I like this one - for the most part, it's sweet and pleasant (with an unexpected floral kick) without being too sickly or overpowering.

Top 5 ¦ Wearable Pink Lipsticks

This is a scheduled post as I am away on holiday at the moment! I'll reply to any comments, questions or queries when I get back!

It's no secret that I love and adore lipstick. Generally, the brighter the better - I'm all for making a statement. However, I was looking through my make-up drawers recently and realised that I have rather a lot of "wearable" pink-toned lipsticks. I favour these for daytime as they are office appropriate and can bring me from drawn and tired looking to sharp and put together in an instant. For the most part, they are some variation of rose or blush but, I also have a couple of wildcards that I still consider wearable but, just with a little more pizzazz!

Trash Talk: An Empties Post

I've noticed that "empties" posts and videos are some of the most divisive in the online beauty world. Some find them quite useful as a series of mini-reviews, others can't get past the "rubbish" aspect. Where do I stand? Well, the reason that I haven't done one before now was that I wasn't too hot on the idea of holding on to my rubbish for the sake of a blog post. I guess I'm not that dedicated - Chelsea Wears has a very funny video in which she talks viewers through a bag of empties at the airport before moving across the country!

So, I'm not going to pretend that these are the only things I've used up over the last couple of months or so. I can't bring myself to save 'em all, so I've just kept a few random things aside over the last while. Some are old favourites and some were new products, so read on to see what I made of them!

Aromatherapy Associates Soothing Cleansing Balm

This is a scheduled post as I am away on holiday at the moment! I'll reply to any comments, questions or queries when I get back!

Cleansing balm in a tube? That's a new one on me! As you all are probably aware, I am a skincare obsessive and love my cleansing balms as a means of really getting deep down and clearing all the dirt and grime out of my skin. I finished the Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm a few weeks ago and, just as I was wondering what I would replace it with and try next, I took a delivery of the Aromatherapy Associates Soothing Cleansing Balm*. Perfect timing!

Take 3: Anti-Wrinkle Products

We are aware that some of our readers are older than us and are on the look-out for reviews of products for mature skin. It's not possible for us to review this type of product properly ourselves, so I've handed the blogging mantle over to my Mam again, after giving her a few PR samples from different price brackets to get to grips with! Here's how she got on...

Take 3 ¦ BB Creams

This is a scheduled post as I am away on holiday at the moment! I'll reply to any comments, questions or queries when I get back!

When the Westernised version of BB creams arrived on the market, I didn't really buy into the hype. I was quite happy using just the Laura Mercier Loose Foundation Powder as my daily base and had heard such mixed reviews about BB creams as a whole that I just wasn't enticed by them. However, after trying (and finishing!) the Vichy Idéalia BB Creme, I fell in love with the light coverage, the insane glow and flawless finish that I felt I just had to get my hands on every BB worth its salt! I've picked my top three favourites to give you a brief overview of why I like them and what they do.

Le Blush Crème de Chanel ¦ 65 Affinité

Good God. I thought I'd seen it all at this stage, but this is one beautiful piece of make-up. I hope you'll excuse me for the amount of gaudy fake flowers in these pictures, but, well, I think they were appropriate because I'm in love. Cue the music...

No but seriously, this is a blush that has really taken my breath away. It's brought out the true make-up maniac in me - I've been telling everyone who will listen about it. Interested? Good, because I have plenty to say about it!

Lanolips Lovely Lanolin Golden Ointment

This is a scheduled post as I am away on holiday at the moment! I'll reply to any comments, questions or queries when I get back!

If you have been reading our blog for awhile, you may be aware that I have suffered a lot with eczema. I say "suffered" in the past tense because I have somewhat got it under control thanks to a combination of products (You can let me know if you'd be interested in a post on what I have used to quasi-cure my eczema!). However, it is still prone to intermittent flare-ups. For instance, I have noticed that whenever I have worn tights this summer, my legs are red, inflamed and itchy come evening time, probably as the skin can't breathe. Once this inflammation dies down, the areas of skin where I get eczema remain itchy and end up dry and flaky which leads to more itching, more inflammation and so on; it's a vicious circle.

Because these flare-ups aren't actual eczema but, rather an irritation of a dormant skin condition, I have found that moisturising is the best course of action to take to soothe and rehydrate the area. Many creams work just fine for this but, the one I have been enjoying using the most is the Lanolips Lovely Lanolin Golden Ointment (€23.99)*.

L'Oreal Professionel Liss Unlimited: Frizz-Ease on Speed

Heads up: there's a new range of smoothing haircare for frizzy hair, and it's a good one. L'Oréal's Professionel range of products had never really piqued my interest until my hairdresser told me a while back that she prefers the shampoos and conditioners from this (cheaper) line to products from Redken and Kérastase. Since then, they have been on my mental radar, and I was more than happy to give this line a go when it was sent to me.

Wishlist: September

This is a scheduled post as I am away on holiday at the moment! I'll reply to any comments, questions or queries when I get back!

This year is just flying by and it kind of makes me sad but, also really proud because I feel like I have accomplished an awful lot so far in 2013 and I like that feeling of productivity and conquering stuff! As you're reading this I am on holiday; probably halfway up the side of Mt Vesuvius or perhaps traipsing the ruins of Pompeii so, hopefully that's going well! However, before I left I had to patch together my monthly wishlist. It was quite large this month and a total mish mash of items so I really did have to whittle it down. Also, just an update on last month's list, I ordered the Erin Condren Life Planner that I mentioned in my August wishlist and I cannot wait to receive it!
