I love lipstick and have a stupid amount at this stage, so it's rare that a colour stops me in my tracks and becomes a must-have. I'd been keen on this colour ever since I first laid eyes on the visuals for Laura Mercier's Dark Spell collection a few months ago, and finally ordered it during a House of Fraser sale last month. I am incredibly happy with it - the packaging, colour and consistency are all spot on. I love the squared-off design and dark metallic finish of the tube.. and the lippie inside is pretty lovely, too.
The shade is a dark, plummy brick-red, and the formula is a bit like MAC's Amplified Cream finish, but creamier and glossier. It's very pigmented and lasts extremely well, especially considering that this is not a matte. I thought it'd be interesting to compare the shade to MAC's famed Rebel - Merlot is definitely more on the winey-brick red side, whilst Rebel is much pinker.
Swatched: Laura Mercier Merlot, MAC Rebel
The colour of this lipstick is really interesting and a little different from the straight-up dark plums and purples that have been popular for quite a while now. There is a purplish tone to this, but in direct sunlight, it looks like more of a dark brick berry-red. It's definitely dark, but the depth of colour is light-dependent and can also be amped up with a lipliner. It stays on well and wears off evenly, leaving a nice stain behind. Overall, I really love this and am so happy to have something a little different in my lipstick collection!
