If I Lost It All...

While it's only make-up and purely materialistic, the thought of losing my beloved make-up collection is almost too scary to contemplate. I have spent years curating it, honing it and whittling it down to products I genuinely love and value. However, I got to thinking the other day "What if it got stolen/lost/irreparably damaged? What would I replace first?" and, after spending far too long contemplating that terror-inducing question, I realised I could actually reel off a list of products, brushes included, that I would have to replace as soon as possible.

I'm actually surprised at how little attachment I have to much of my make-up. I found it very easy to pick these products. For my base layer, I chose my favourite foundation ever; YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat with my beloved Vichy Dermablend powder. It will come as no surprise that I rate the Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener and NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer above most others and, as far as I'm concerned, they will be forever in my make-up bag.

It was hard to whittle down eye products. I have a lot of MAC eyeshadows and I love many of them. However, ever since getting this quad after a MAC makeover, it's been my go-to eye look, featuring MAC Vanilla, Swiss Chocolate, Quarry and Smut. These four shadows are perfect for day and night, for creating both neutral and smokey eyes.

Despite having innumerable MAC Paint Pots, I would actually only repurchase one, Painterly, and instead, keep the beautiful Maybelline On and On Bronze in my collection. MAC Teddy eyeliner is a must-have for me and I would buy one for everyone in the world if I had the money. It is the perfect creamy bronze that gives life to so many eyeshadows as well as looking beautiful on its own. I'm not entirely beholden to any one mascara but, for the last few months I have been loving the MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash. And, for brows, obviously it would be the inimitable Make Up Forever Aqua Brow

Lips are a hard one to whittle down. I hold MAC lipsticks in such high regard so, I would definitely repurchase the majority of the ones I have. However, I picked three that would tide me over; a neutral, a mid-tone pink and a rich plum. From left to right, we have MAC Plumful, MAC Chatterbox and MAC Shy Girl. Honestly, if you were looking to get into lipstick, these three would be great to start with.

It was easy to pick cheek products and you're probably sick to death of hearing about these three! My favourite bronzer ever is the Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel. For blush, obviously I would pick the Tarte Amazonian Clay in Exposed and, even though it's a newbie, I have such an intense love for the Laura Mercier Spellbound Illuminator - I don't think I'll ever be without it!

My make-up brush collection has pretty much exploded since I started blogging and I don't regret it as I love brushes and firmly believe the tools make the look. However, if I was starting over, the 7 below are the ones I would go for. From Real Techniques, the Powder Brush, Blush Brush and Buffing Brush. From MAC, the 224, 252 and 217 brushes and, from Kiko, the eyebrow brush I picked up when in Venice.

In some ways, when I look at this edit of products, it makes me realise how superfluous it is to have 6 foundations, 18 blushes and innumerable eyeshadows and lipsticks. I could easily and happily get by on just the above products. There is something very calming about having a capsule make-up collection and I kind of feel the need to go through my drawers and weed out anything I don't need, use or truly love!

I'd love to hear what items you would have to repurchase if something happened to your make-up collection!

  1. Great post Sinead! I'd also be lost if (god-forbid) a disaster occurred and I lost my makeup collection. The products I'd run straight to the shops to re-purchase are:
Garnier Perfect Blur/Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch, Vichy Dermablend Cream Stick, Laura Mercier Undercover, Catrice Skin Finish, Urban Decay Naked Flushed, MAC Patina, Rimmel Scandaleyes Liner in Black, Benefit They're Real.

As for brushes: Real Techniques Expert Face, large powder, blush and contour, Louise Young eyeshadow shader and crease. Louise Young slanted liner.

It's not makeup, but I couldn't live without OPI Nail Envy either!

    Kat | DollyRouge

  2. Lovely picks! The blush in Exposed and lipstick in Shy Girl caught my eye...

  3. My list would read quite like yours! Especially YSL foundation, Plumful (absolutely obsessed) and Maybelline colour tattoo - I couldn't go more than a few days without any of them! x

  4. Brilliant idea for a post! Loved reading your picks. My poor wishlist is steadily growing to ridiculous proportions now though!!! x

  5. What a great idea for a post indeed. Really makes you reflect on what do you actually need (versus my collection, which gets formed based on what I want)! haha
