It's been a while since you've seen me talking about hair products (I think this was the last time?! Or maybe this!) and, honestly, that's because I am SO uninspired when it comes to my hair. Day-to-day, I don't use heat on it, nor do I style it and, so, the only product I really need to maintain it is shampoo. Yep, I don't even use conditioner on a regular basis! However, when I do style my hair, it is usually in some form of curls or waves which, on straight hair, means I need some good and strong products on hand to hold the style for the entire day/night.
When Schwarzkopf sent me over a bottle of their new Silhouette Flexible Hold* (RRP €8.90) pump hairspray, I set it to one side because (a) hair products don't get my motor running as much a make-up does and (b) I am fearful of new hair stuff as I never know what to do with it and it is inevitable that I will end up with a greasy mop of hair thanks to clumsy application! However, I was curling my hair last weekend and decided to use it instead of my ever present Elnett and, holy crap, I am pretty sure this is THE perfect hairspray formula for holding textured styles in naturally straight hair!
Schwarzkopf promises that Flexible Hold leaves no residue or dull looking coating on the hair and that it makes hair look shiny and not stiff or unnatural. All of the above, and more, is true. When I curl my hair, I section it off and work from the bottom layer up to my crown, hairpraying each completed layer as I go. While this does maintain the curls, the end result is a hell of a lot of product that looks waxy and sticky and feels crisp and crunchy to the touch.
On this occasion, I sectioned and curled my barnet as I would usually but, instead of enveloping the finished curls in a cloud of Elnett, I spritzed each curl with just one pump of the Flexible Hold. By the end of the process, the curls were still sitting pretty but, they didn't look stiff or unnatural in my hair. The product claims to be invisible and allows for brushing and restyling so, I was pleased to see that, when I began to tease around the crown of my head, there was no flaky fallout and the product still held the volumised hair in place.
While this is a bit more pricey than I would usually spend on a hairspray, I think it will be worth having one stashed away for the odd time that I do get all fancy with my hair. There are a few other products in the line and I would be especially interested in checking out the Flexible Hold Style & Care Lotion to give my lacklustre locks some oomph!
