For their summer 2013 collection, L'Été Papillon de Chanel, the brand drew inspiration from butterfly wings; thinking in terms of colour blocking in vibrant shades that conjure the carefree feelings of playfulness and energy that are most associated with summer.
Visually, the collection is a feast with a colour palette that ranges from the palest gold to tones of acid yellow and blue. Eyes are the focal point, as much of the campaign imagery suggests, with the collection featuring five shades of Inimitable Waterproof mascara, one Stylo Yeux Waterproof (RRP €23.00) eyeliner and six shades of the new and limited edition Stylo Eyeshadow. Three nail polishes (RRP €22.50), three lipglosses (RRP €26.00) and two lipsticks (RRP €30.50) round out the electric hued collection.
We were sent some products to introduce us to the collection. Created exclusively for L'Été Papillon de Chanel are Stylo Eyeshadow* (RRP €28.00), a compact cream eyeshadow that promises to be longlasting and highly pigmented. These are available in six shades; Black Stream, Moon River, Jade Shore, Pink Lagoon, Blue Bay and Cool Gold and below we have Pink Lagoon pictured and swatched.
In terms of formula, I can't fault Stylo Eyeshadow. It is creamy and dense and packed full of colour and subtle shimmer that gives an illuminating, radiant effect to the skin. Chanel say that they can be used as eyeliner, sheered out for a wash of colour of densely packed for a more deliberate, colour blocked effect. Pink Lagoon is a coral pink which, while beautiful, strikes me as being just a touch too red/orange toned for the average Irish complexion, bringing out all the pink and red undertones and leading to eyes that look tired. However, on tanned or olive skin, this would be breathtakingly beautiful. Due to the impeccable formula, I am definitely interested in picking up Black Stream and Cool Gold and will be hotfooting it to the counter come May 31st!
Another striking release with this collection is the vibrantly hued Inimitable Waterproof mascaras* (RRP €30.00). Joining the permanent black shade are Aqua Blue, Blue Note, Lime Light and Zest, all brightly coloured, bold and extremely fun! Pictured below is Zest, a vibrant, true yellow that packs a punch.
I think that the bright shades are probably best worn as shown in the campaign imagery i.e. for adding a fun pop of colour to your lashes and lashline. However, if you're feeling brave, go all out! What surprised me most about Zest was how incredibly pigmented it is. Usually coloured mascaras don't show up but, even this yellow was properly bold when applied! While I wouldn't personally get much use out of the bright mascaras, the waterproof formula and false lash effect it gives makes me intrigued to check out the, admittedly more boring, black shade!
I really love this collection. From the beautiful images to the inspiration to break out of our comfort zones and be bright and beautiful (like a butterfly!) this summer, it's a really pleasing collection all round.
