Interview: Leonard Daly

Way back in 2011, we had a series of interviews with people from the beauty world called VA Investigates. We've decided to somewhat resurrect this by conducting a series of interviews with some of Ireland's best make-up artists. There is a serious amount of talent in Ireland and we feel that it should be celebrated and promoted as much as possible. Opening this series of interviews we have Leonard Daly, a prolific Irish make-up artist who also has a brilliant blog over at beautybaked.com. Leonard has his work featured on a regular basis in the likes of The Irish Times and Tatler, as well as TV programmes such as Xposé and Off the Rails. I think you'll agree with us when we say that Leonard's work speaks for itself!

What is your favourite upcoming make-up trend for SS13?
For Spring I am loving that big brows are back, for me they have never really gone out of fashion. I think a fuller brow is always more youthful looking and I am forever telling my clients to throw their tweezers out!
Top 5 products in your kit?
This changes so much, but there are a few that I always return to. At the moment I am loving Armani's Maestro Foundation, it is the perfect amount of coverage which can be built up to a medium coverage if needed. I think I will always love Becca liquid highlighter in the shade Pearl, it is the most perfect texture to add a beautiful soft sheen to your skin. One of my favourite blushers, Convertible Colour form Stila, have recently come back on the Irish market, i love these they can be used as blush, lipstick and even eye-shadow. Mascara is always one that I try new ones all of the time but I always end up still returning to my three favourites, which are YSL Shocking, Lancome's Hypnose Star and Armani's Eyes to Kill. I find it really hard to choose a top lipstick, it's kinda like choosing a favourite child for me but Chanel lippys are always amazing
What has been your favourite make-up job in recent times?
There have been a few gigs in the past few weeks that I am still in love with, one was for Pamela Scott, which was photographed by Sarah Doyle and styled by Catherine Condell, the model was the beautiful Sarah Morrissey and we did the most beautifully simple look on her with a statement orange red lip. The other shoot that I am loving was a shoot that I did for Brown Thomas's spring beauty, it was feature in the Weekender magazine, this was shot by Daniel Holfeld and the models that we used were Sarah Morrissey again and Karen Fitzpatrick.

Do you have a staple make-up look?
I do not have a staple look as I need to move with fashion and beauty trends or else I would never work! But I do like to keep it very simple, I always think that makeup should take a back seat to the person wearing it, people should notice the person not the makeup.
What products do you think deserve more love?
I think people need to find the products that suit their skin, look and wallet. I don't think it is up to me to push products on anyone, I do write about products that I have used and loved but I always give my honest opinion of them, so if this is plugging them I don't ever feel that I have done them a disservice as I really do believe that they are great products!

Thanks Leonard! Be sure to check out Beauty Baked for great make-up news and tips, as well as some awesome baking recipes.
