It feels like I begin every mascara review these days with "As you probably know by now, I'm a total mascara junkie so, I was super excited to try X." But, alas, that is the truth. Few beauty products excite me as much as a new mascara and, to be honest, the weirder the concept is behind the mascara, the more excited I get! And concepts don't get much weirder than this, the latest mascara release from No7 called Fanomenal Lashes* (€17.23).
I mean, for starters, just check out that wand! It's practically bald save for a few spirals of stubbly bristles and that's about it. When it arrived, I was so taken aback by the sparse applicator that I Instagrammed a picture of it and one girl came back with "Ugh that looks AWFUL!" and, to be honest, I was inclined to agree with her!
No7 call this piebald stick, for want of a better word, a "revolutionary star shaped brush" which works to volumise, lengthen and separate lashes to created a fanned out effect. Now, I don't know about you but, I see nothing remotely star shaped about the wand above. However, and this is a big however, No7 are bang on the money with their claims of a more defined fan of lashes. No pun intended but, this stuff is phenomenal!
To begin with, it doesn't smudge or flake during the day despite the fact that its not marketed as a waterproof or long lasting mascara. Lashes feel soft once the mascara dries and not at all crispy which is one thing I cannot stand in a mascara! It's worth noting that this mascara is on the wetter side of things and can be a bit messy for the first few uses, dotting below the brow once your open your eye fully. I just allowed it to dry out a bit for the first few days by leaving the cap slightly unscrewed and the formula righted itself!
Now, formulation out of the way, let's get onto that brush! Despite how awkward it looks, it really does an incredible job of coating the lashes and getting right into those piddly inner corner ones. The funny dispersion of short and stubbly bristles works to get right into the root of the lash and pulls the hairs upwards and outwards into a, yep you guessed it, fanned out effect! If you're looking for intense volume or curl, this isn't the mascara for you but, if a lengthened, fluttery, doe-eyed effect is more your thing then, without a doubt, you'll love Fanomenal Lashes!
