Viva Irish: Orla Kiely EDP

Orla Kiely has to be one of Ireland's biggest success stories in terms of design in recent years. Her prints are instantly recognisable and have donned shopping bags, biscuit tins and even buses! Orla is now based in Clapham, London, where her designs have been met with continued success - remember the furore last February when Kate Middleton donned a Kiely coat? It sold out within minutes online, and put even more spotlight on the brand.


Orla Kiely fragrance has actually been around since 2010, and she's also recently launched a second one, Rosie. When I was sent the original EDP purse spray, I knew that my mam would love it ten times more than I ever could, so passed it on to her to review. Here's how she got on...

I’ve never really bought into the whole Orla Kiely thing. Leafy bags, dresses, wallpaper - none of them did it for me. However, I really admire this Irish woman who had created an international design phenomenon around her personal brand. Furthermore,her venture into the perfume market - one that is already crowded with heavy hitting brands - is a bold statement about where she wants to go next. 

A week of sampling this scent has converted me. The gorgeous packaging stands out from the crowd. A distinctive Orla-flower-styled box opens to reveal a glass perfume bottle with a leaf design and colour coordinated orange cap, housed in a pretty drawstring dust bag. 

The perfume is subtle and understated – light floral top notes balanced with fig, sandalwood and a hint of chocolate. It grew on me all week. It’s warm without being sweet, floral without being flowery, and it has a fresh and relaxing tone.

                    

This soft, delicate scent is a statement of confidence for the woman who likes her point of view to come before her perfume. It’s more boardroom than bedroom, won’t distract from the main business of the day, and won’t overpower the audience into submission. It’s the ideal companion for client lunches, civilised days out, and evenings where subtlety and assurance are the mood. It definitely won’t suit long late nights, or raucous clubbers. But then, that’s not what Orla Kiely is about.
