Lip Liner Lovin'

It's no secret that I'm a lipstick junkie. There is no justification for the amount of lipsticks I own and there is no rational way to explain the differences between one hot pink and the next. However, it would seem that my obsession has recently evolved to include lip liners.

I used to think that lip liners were only for older women who worried about their lipstick bleeding into the lines their lips but, if it's one thing that blogging and watching YouTube videos has taught me is that lip liner can really change a look. It can subtly alter the lines of your lip, create sharp edges and a neat finish that really can't be achieved with lipstick alone.

One of my favourite lip liner techniques is one I picked up from a MAC make-up artist and have since seen Pixiwoo using regularly in their videos and that is to use a darker liner than the lipstick calls for. Now, don't get me wrong, I initially thought I would look like I was channeling Lil' Kim but, have since learned that, so long as the liner is in the same shade family as the lipstick, it gives amazing dimension to the overall look.

For instance, MAC Chicory liner, a browned orange, looks gorgeous with coral and peach lippies like Shy Girl and Ravishing while MAC Brick, a browned red, is the perfect accompaniment to Russian Red. Pixiwoo also use MAC Nightmoth liner, almost black, to compliment Rebel lipstick so, I think that one will be next on the list as Rebel is one of my favourite lipsticks at the moment!

A few lip liner tips...
  • Don't go too far outside the natural line of your lips. By all means even out the edges but, too much will leave you looking like Coco the Clown!
  • Make sure to line right into the corners of the mouth for a crisp finish.
  • Once you like your line, colour in the lips with the liner. Not only will this keep your lipstick on longer but, by having the same shade underneath, it will also give you a bit of leeway time before having to touch-up when the lipstick wears off.
  • For a super sharp look, tidy up the edges with concealer/foundation and a small brush.

  1. Nice tip, I really must pick up another lipliner or two. They just don't excite me so I don't tend to buy them!

    1. They never used to excite me but, recently, I just can't get enough! I figure it's something that I can always use so, it won't go to waste or out of style!

  2. I only have one lipliner so far - Brick to go with Russian Red and I have to say it really does make a difference. Must pick up some ones to suit more netural lipsticks as well:)

  3. Have you tried the No.7 lipliners? Are they comparable to the MAC ones? Hate having to pare pencils!! x

    1. I haven't tried the No 7 ones purely because I get a lot of lipsticks on the Back to MAC scheme and just pick up MAC liners while I'm there. However, I have heard good things, especially about their nude one. The Isa Dora ones are meant to be good too! x

  4. I must also add being an ardent fan of the lip liner concept that it always stays longer than the lipstick and helps to retain your look in the parties even after food.I love to line my lips and use a gloss over it.

  5. Nice and helpful tips.It is very essential to line the lip to give a crisp finish to the lips...but make sure that the colour of the liner is not too different and darker than the lipstick...it really looks weird.
