Birthday Spoils

My friend Jenny is the master of birthdays, especially hilarious birthday cards. I'm only showing you a bit of what she made me, as the rest of it is, ahem, embarrassing. She was incredibly generous to me this year so I though I'd show you all what she gave me!

MAC Collection: Cheek Products

Our lovely follower Aislinn requested that I do a rundown of my whole MAC collection after I tweeted a picture of my overstuffed lipstick drawer. As always, I am happy to oblige so this is the first weekly installment of my MAC collection (Apologies if you have no interest in MAC, just skip these posts!). I asked on Twitter what you guys wanted to see first and cheek products proved most popular so, without further ado, here are my MAC cheek products!

FOTN: MAC Golden Gaze

Can I start off by apologising for my bitchy stare I'm giving the camera in the first picture? I took these in a rush before heading out for some shopping and the launch of the Dublin Festival of Fashion last night, and, yeah, I look questionable. Anyways, the main purpose of this post is to show you guys the utter amazingness of MAC Golden Gaze. Behold!

Floral NOTD!

Max Factor Disco Pink, Barry M Bright Pink, Models Own Jade Stone, Sally Hansen Café Au Lait

I've recently been getting back into nail art, and this floral manicure is one that I've been meaning to try for an age. It's definitely doable, but not as straightforward as leopard nails, so I just did my thumbs and ring fingers. I quite like the effect, it's not too patterned or overpowering. For the flowers and leaves I used a hair grip as a dotting tool, which I've done before to create a polka dot manicure

Do you like this look?

Dublin Fashion Festival Launch

The launch of the second annual Dublin Fashion Festival (8th-11th September) took place last night in the Banking Hall of the Westin Hotel.

We went along to see what trends were emerging for AW 11/12 from stores like Brown Thomas, Arnotts, Penneys and Clerys.

Orange and tweed seems to be the order of the season for women while fashion-conscious men can expect skinny trousers, pointy ankle boots and a lot of tailoring. For both sexes, Mad Men-esque style is paramount.

The Banking Hall, which is a spectacular room with chandeliers and ornate vaulted ceilings, was cast in a pink hue (hence why all of these pictures are a pink overload!) and it was very posh and girly altogether! There were various booths including demonstration by LA Make-Up Academy, manicures by Nu Essence and even a milliner crafting gorgeous fascinators! Drinks were flowing courtesy of eve, a sparkling, girly alcoholic drink (not really our cup of tea but, it was perfect for this event!) and there was a sushi bar and, our favourite, a  white chocolate fountain with marshmallows and fresh strawberries and pineapple ready for dipping! Divine!

Click after the jump to see some shots from inside the event!

Dublin Fashion Festival Launch: FOTN and OOTN

Tonight we attended the launch of the Dublin Fashion Festival. We'll be giving a full rundown of the launch in a post tomorrow but, in the meantime, here is my FOTN and OOTN!

FOTN: MAC Smoked Ruby

I've fallen in love...with an eyeshadow. Sad but true! Sinéad & I both fell prey to Smoked Ruby from the Semi-Precious Collection the other day and, well, I don't regret buying it.
We're both massive fans of these Mineralise eyeshadows as they are essentially a one-step, foolproof smokey eye. I wet my brush with a spray bottle of water to intensify the colour, and the results were fabulous!

100,000 Hits/400th Post Giveaway [CLOSED]

We'll have reached a few milestones this week. We surpassed 100,000 hits and we will also have our 400th post up which, since we started this blog in November 2010, seems like an amazing achievement. As always, we wouldn't be reaching these pivotal points with your loyalty, dedication and support and so, together with our friends at N.Y.C. and Beauty Emporium, we have put together two lovely prizes for two lucky winners to say a massive and heartfelt thank you!

FOTD: Gig Night

Last night Eoin Glackin was headlining Whelan's and I went along with Kev, Dee and a few other people. We had a great night and, while I didn't get an opportunity to take a picture of my outfit, I did get a few of my make-up.

As an aside, I got really excited last night about make-up. I didn't realise I had become at all disheartened or disillusioned by using make-up but, mucking around with my face beforehand reminded me how much I absolutely love the stuff and I feel kinda inspired again!!

NOTD: The Perfect Nude?!

A lot of us have a perfect, plain nail polish and this is mine. Feliciana (weird name) by Wild and Crazy is quite a pale, slightly pink-toned nude colour with really subtle shimmer running through it. If you read this blog a lot you'll know that I am hardly afraid of colour, but this is nice for a change!

The shade doesn't wash out my own skin tone and the polish itself was super cheap at €2.99 from my local chemist. If you see any of this brand in your chemist, snap one up quickly, as they've now disappeared from mine :(

Do we like?

My New BFF: Dior Amber Diamond

Hello friend...

Harry Potter FOTD and OOTD

FINALLY got to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II today and, as I type this, I have a crying-induced headache! Dee and I had planned on seeing it in London but, it seemed only the Odeon in Leicester Square was showing it and they wanted between £19 and £25 PER TICKET! That's easily a MAC lippie or a few Sleek palettes...!

We were sent a box of goodies from BeautyEmporium the other day as a thank you for hosting the Sleek giveaway and, I really wanted to try out a few of the products I got. If you want a review on any of them, just let me know!

Holiday Pressies

My sisters and dad came back from their holidays today and they brought me a lovely present!

A YSL Rouge Pur Lipstick in #19 Fuschia Pink and some of those yummy hard sherbet-filled sweets that come in a big long chain that are so synonymous with summer holidays!

I love, love, love YSL lipsticks and, half-jokingly, suggested that one would make the perfect holiday present so I was thrilled when they presented me with this gorgeous, shocking pink shade! They picked really well! I already have one of these lippies, #148 Tea Rose and I love the finish of these lipsticks, a kind of semi matte with a subtle gloss and they are really long-wearing. Cue creepy lip shot!

Thanks Aisling and Ciara (and Daddy!!)

Viva Health: Fat Fighting Foods

*This is a guest post by Kevin Warren of Synergy Fitness Ireland. Please see the end of the post for more information!*

Almost everyone has their "problem" area, the part of the body from where they just can't shift the pudge/flab/fat/jiggle from. Common "problem" areas for women include but, are not limited to, the lower abdomen (belly), the upper thighs, the upper arms and the back. While these stubborn areas can cause some amount of heartache when you're bursting your bangers in the gym and they totally rebel and refuse to shift, there are some small dietary changes/additions you can incorporate to help beat the bulge.

As with all of these posts, I want to preface this by saying that none of these tips to fighting the fat and beating the bulge will work if you don't maintain a healthy diet and exercise regime. Caffeine in coffee/green tea is great for increasing your metabolism, as we will look at below, but, this does not mean you can drink 5 cups of coffee full of cream, sugar, syrup and chocolate powder every day and expect to lose your muffin top! All aspects of your life, from eating and exercising, to decreasing alcohol consumption must work in tandem with each other if you expect to see your desired results.

Christine posts multiple times daily and her content varies from swatches and reviews to features and beauty tips. She has been one of our personal inspirations and aspirations and we were thrilled to get this opportunity to ask her some questions about her blogging life and her make-up loves, hates and Holy Grail products.

Marbled Nails

I willingly hold my hands up and say that I cannot, for the life of me, do nail art with a pen or a brush. I don't have the patience and I seem to have perpetually shaky hands. However, I do seem to be able to do nail art with printing, dipping, anything else you please really.

After the very positive response to the newsprint nails I featured I few months ago, I've been on the lookout for something else artsy that clumsy old me could try and give you guys a step-by-step guide to and, I think I've found it. Nail marbling has been floating around on YouTube for awhile now and, having watched countless videos in awe, I've lumped together a few of the different tips to come up with what I think is an easy tutorial to marble nails!

FOTD: New Products

I went for a lovely girlie day out with my mam today where we went for lunch in The Counter Burger, tried dresses on in Brown Thomas for my graduation (no luck yet!) and bought a few bits in BT2! This was my make-up; very neutral yet summery and using loads of new products that I bought/was sent which was kind of nerve-wrecking as I'm comfortable with my usual make-up routine but, I was happy with the overall result!

London 2011: What We Ate

We know we aren't the first people to travel to London and we know most of you have already been but, we're going to do a post on the food we ate in London because we had some amazing meals! We felt we ought to document them for you as a way of giving you a bit of a restaurant guide to the city and, well, pretty much everyone likes pictures of food!

Friday

For Friday's lunch we went to Nandos in Elephant and Castle but, we didn't take pictures of that food. Honestly we were totally underwhelmed by Nandos having heard so much obsessive stuff about it. The chicken was fine but, not at all mind-blowing and we wouldn't necessarily be bothered about going back again! If anyone could explain the whole Nandos craze to us we'd appreciate it as we feel like we've missed something!

This was honestly one of the highlights of our weekend! We are both a bit obsessive about sparkling water and we love when it comes in a can-which you can't get here so, this was the perfect treat after hours spent trekking around the Imperial War Museum!
We had the most amazing meal in Jamie's Italian in Covent Garden. We started with a selection of Italian breads (left) and then Sinéad ordered the Italian Burger with Funky Chips and Dee had Prawn Linguine (the picture seems to have disappeared from the camera?!) The meal was really reasonably priced at about £30 for the two of us!

Review: Whizzer Whitening Strips

*This is a scheduled post as we are currently in London for the weekend. We'll try to keep up with comments etc. or get to them when we return!*

A couple of weeks ago we were contacted by Whizzer Whitening Strips asking if we would like to try their product. We jumped at the chance as whitening strips are not very common in Ireland (They are quite popular in the US and UK, especially the Crest range) and we wanted to see if these ones did what they promised.

A box contains 56 strips and can be used in a couple of ways;
  • Once a day for 28 days (top and bottom teeth equals 56 strips)
  • Twice a day for 14 days
However, because there are two of us, we decided to split the box and just do our top teeth twice a day for 14 days. Neither of our bottom teeth (teeths? toofs?!) are particularly discoloured and, we figured, it's only really your top teeth that are seen!

Viva Irish: The Handmade Soap Company

*This is a scheduled post as we are currently in London for the weekend. We'll try to keep up with comments etc. or get to them when we return!*

Two Viva Irish posts in a week? We're spoiling you! Since we started this series, we've been blown away by the number of Irish beauty brands that our eyes have suddenly been opened to. Who knew that the Emerald Isle had its own budding cosmetics industry?

One brand that we knew we wanted to feature as soon as we came across it was The Handmade Soap Company and we went out on a very tentative limb and asked them would they like to be a part of our attempt to spotlight Irish beauty products.

Thankfully, they were delighted to be featured and sent us an overwhelmingly generous amount of products to try, test and potentially review for you lot. The Handmade Soap Company was founded in 2009 and has gone from strength to strength, offering a 100% natural skincare products which were created with sufferers of psoriasis and other skin ailments in mind.

One thing we really want to point out about this brand is that the packaging is absolutely gorgeous and it is almost a shame to open and throw away the boxes! Everything is very vintage-esque and all of the jars are heavy glass which feels and looks very expensive. You can see all of the products we received and their packaging here

It would be impossible to review each and every product we received, no matter how much we'd love to, so we are going to focus in on a few of the things that stood out to us the most. We chose the Body Butters as our joint favourite and Sinéad will also review the Shaving Soap and After Shave Cream while Dee will give her thoughts on the Hand Cream and Shower Gel.

Viva Irish: Rockstar Tan

*This is a scheduled post as we are currently in London for the weekend. We'll try to keep up with comments etc. or get to them when we return!*

We're always on the lookout for the next Irish brand to feature as part of our Viva Irish series which, gratefully, has been really well-received by you lovely readers.

A Twitter conversation brought Irish tan company, Rockstar Tan, onto our radar and, we soon learnt that it would be a perfect feature for Viva Irish. While neither of us are fake tan junkies, often finding it more hassle than its worth, we're always on the lookout for the next best thing and, ideally, the next easy-to-apply-wear-and-remove fake tan. We were sent a number of products from the range to trial and, if they were worthy, report back to you on. Over the last few weeks, we've been bronzing ourselves with, the very cutely named, Groupie (Instant Bronze Self Tan Mousse), Fame (Instant Mineral Self Tan) and Access All Areas (Instant Bronze Self Tan Spray)

London Calling: What's in Our Make-Up Bags?!

We're sure some of you will balk at the amount of make-up we're bringing to London this weekend but, we assure you that this is a highly scaled down version! So scaled down in fact that we've made sure not to dupe up on any products e.g. Dee's bringing the Naked palette while Sinéad's bringing a mixture of MAC shadows.

The thing about make-up is that you're never sure what mood you'll be in from one day to the next so, to save disappointment and feeling uncomfortable in what you've got on, it's best to cover all bases! So, here's a little breakdown of what we're each bringing!

FOTD featuring NYC Cosmetics!

Both of us recently received a selection of NYC Cosmetics to try out. I think one of the best ways of showing the products to you guys is to show what they actually look like on my face, so I decided to include a few of them in today's FOTD!

VA Investigates: Beaut.ie's Kirstie and Aisling McDermott

We know you know who these two gorgeous (or should that be beaut.iful?!) ladies are! But, for those of you who are bad with names and faces, allow us to introduce you to Kirstie and Aisling McDermott, the sisters behind Irish beauty website, Beaut.ie

Kirstie and Aisling started Beaut.ie in 2006 and, since then, it has grown to become Ireland's most successful and influential beauty mecca, grossing over 20,000 visitors per day!

The Beaut.ie girls were one of our main inspirations for starting this website and, we willingly attribute most of our success to Kirstie Tweeting our URL one November night!  We've gotten to know them both over the last few months and they've given us some invaluable support and advice for which we are really grateful! We're really excited that they agreed to be a feature of one of these posts and we know you're all probably dying to know their blogging tips and tricks, their make-up loves and hates and personal beauty advice!

Review: Trilogy

While make-up is our first love, we always get a certain thrill  when we get to try new skincare products. For both of us, our skin is the canvas on which we apply our beloved slap so, we want it as smooth and as unblemished as is humanly possible.

Enter Trilogy, the skincare brand from New Zealand. We recently got sent a bundle of these products and have been putting them through rigorous testing (by rigorous we really mean using them for the last three weeks or so!) and are back to let you know what we think.

NOTD: Leopard

I haven't done any kind of nail art in ages, but I got exceptionally bored today and decided to give leopard nails a go. Not my best effort by any means, but I love the colours together! What do we think?

Oxegen 2011: FOTDs and NOTD ( and some gratuitous Beyoncé pictures!)

Some of you may know that I was on a work placement as the final stage of getting my BA in Journalism. As part of that placement, I got to go to Oxegen this weekend (Friday and Sunday) and work/play in the VIP area. It was a really amazing experience to see one of the biggest European music festivals from the other side of the barriers! I took some pictures and some FOTDs for you all so, here they are! (Apologies for the quality of the FOTD shots-they were taken on my iPhone!)

Review: Avon SuperSHOCK MAX Mascara

Dee has ranted and raved about how amazing the Avon SuperSHOCK mascara is ever since she received and reviewed it. She even went so far as to inform me one day that SuperSHOCK is *gasp* better than my coveted CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume (AKA Max Factor False Lash Effect)!

As a mascara junkie (simply due to my crappy fair lashes and not enough money for regular eyelash tints!), this seemingly ludicrous claim by Dee had me fearfully intrigued. While I couldn't imagine any mascara topping the effects of my beloved Lash Blast Volume I, quite frankly, didn't want to relent and try to find one.

So, when this little baby was couriered to my front door, I was more than a bit reluctant to relinquish that fat, orange, length-and-volume-filled tube from my paws and embrace a new brand of mascara. However, for the good of this website and your beauty-obsessed minds, I plucked up the courage and put the Lash Blast away.

We're going to sound like idiots saying this but we both really love giving back to our readers! Doing giveaways is genuinely so much fun for us, and this was a particularly popular one. Read on to see if you won!

NOTD: Angelica Holiday Fun

I am IN LOVE with this polish! I picked it up in my local chemist for a bargainous €3.99. The wear and formula is brilliant and I LOVE the bottle. This shade of purple is really hard to photograph, it's actually a lot deeper, brighter and more red-based in real life.

It's not a brand I'd heard of before, but all of the shades looked amazing and super-summery. They do a shade which looks like the most perfect dupe of Chanel Mimosa that I just can't wait to get my hands on :)
