Top 5: Foundations

The next instalment in my Top 5 series will be on foundation. As I have said many a time on this blog, I'm not a huge foundation fan and don't require much in the way of coverage or longevity. However, I wouldn't be a very good beauty blogger if I didn't still try and test foundations! All in the name of the blog, you see!

These are my Top 5 foundations ever. Some are old favourites and some are new entries but, are all equally as good in my opinion.

NARS Sheer Glow: I procured this foundation after my poor mam fell victim to an inattentive sales assistant and a poor lighting situation. She was matched at least two shades too light which sucked for her but, was great for me!

Sheer Glow gives, as the name would suggest, a light, glowy finish. Coverage is medium I would say but, infinitely buildable and lends itself to a very flawless finish.

The "wet" nature of this foundation makes it ideal for dry to normal skintypes as it doesn't settle in lines or cling on to dry or flaky skin. Instead it smoothes and conceals them. I'm not sure how it would fare for oilier skins as it may have more of a propensity to slip and slide but, if you have oily skin and have tried Sheer Glow, please let us now how you find it in the comments.

MAC Studio Sculpt: For me, this foundation is as full coverage as I can handle. A little goes a long way and you do need to add definition and depth to your face with contouring and highlighting as it has a bit of a mask-like finish. This isn't a bad thing though as it provides for the most flawless, smooth base.

It has a very thick, creamy texture and I think it would work for most skintypes. It's the foundation I pull out if I know I'm going on a night out and it will be a late one because, it doesn't oxidise and looks as good at the end of the day as it did when freshly applied.

Avon Ideal Flawless: This is a very recent addition to my foundation wardrobe but, has become a fast favourite. Formulated with a flawless finish in mind, as the name would suggest, it blends seamlessly into the skin and seems to work from within as opposed to creating a cake-like layer on the skin's surface.

We have a full look at the range here and a more in-depth review will be coming up before it's released in February 2012 but, it's safe to say I love it! I actually passed one of the darker shades on to my mam and she loves it and considers it on par with her Chanel Vitalumiere which speaks volumes I think!

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua: I don't actually own this foundation myself but, it's on my "To Buy" list! My sister Aisling picked it up during the summer and, though I have only used it a handful of times, the results have been stellar!

It's extremely viscous, easily the most watery foundation I have used so, a little goes a very long way. It's definitely a light coverage foundation so, not one everyone would like but, it suits me well. It's actually quite like the Avon Ideal Flawless in that it settles into your skin really nicely instead of just sitting on top.

Liz Earle Sheer Skin Tint: Slipping this one in casually at the end as I know it's not technically a foundation but, it's quite a tinted tinted moisturiser so, I feel like I can get away with it!

On a daily basis, I just wear MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural as my foundation. I'm lucky that my skin is quite good and that this is just enough to keep any redness or shine at bay but, on days where my skin is not playing by the rules, I lash on a bit of Liz Earle Sheer Skin Tint to tide me over and cover up the nasties!

I have a really in-depth review of this here so, check it out if you're in the market for a light coverage foundation/tinted moisturiser!

Are there any foundations you think I should try?

  1. I find clinque foundation good...very light but good coverage. Especially if you have problems with dry patches like I used to get. I think it was the supermoisture one. And maybelline foundations are actually pretty decent if you're on a budget!
I've used a LOT of avon products and I have to say they are pure sh*t.

  2. We've had a lot of luck with the Avon products we've tried.

I never really gave the brand much thought but, have been blown away by some of their stuff like the lipsticks and the Ideal Flawless foundation which we both wear on an almost daily basis!

  3. Oh Sinead how you suck me in with your foundation posts!! I find Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua very very similar to Bourjois Healthy Mix. Heard that they are both somehow linked/under Chanel/made in the same place!?

  6. Actually I will admit the Avon lipsticks are alright and I use them myself. Was never mad about their foundations though. Oh and the Avon 'MagiX face perfector' makes a nice primer or you can wear it alone. I'm starting to sound like I work for them lol. (original anonymous)

  8. I have to disagree on the Nars it's neither sheer and it doesn't give a glow and if your not blessed with youthful skin like your own it does settle in fine liner an shows up dry skin that I never knew I had (in saying that my friend loves it) but I don't think it's all that and a packet of chrisps

  10. I'm actually a huge fan of Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse. Light coverage, wears well throughout the day, and my face doesn't feel like an oil slick at the end of the day. :)
