3-Step Prep: How to Wear Bright Lipsticks

It's no secret that Dee and I both love bright and bold lipstick. However, even if you're brave enough to wear it, there's a certain amount of preparation that you must do in order to make the more obnoxious shades work.

Nude and more neutral shades are the easiest to wear but, mattes and brights are entirely unforgiving so it's worth incorporating some/all of these tips into your routine for achieving a perfect pout!

1. Exfoliation is Key: A lip scrub will remove any dry or loose skin that may appear lumpy under your lipstick. Lush does some great scrubs, including their festive Pow Wow scrub with popping candy, but, you can also make a lip scrub quite easily using sugar and olive oil.

2. Hydration Helps: We all know we're supposed to drink around 8 glasses of water a day and that's at minimum. However, increasing your water intake will help improve the appearance and health of lips (and skin!) and keep your pout looking good.

3. Moisturisation Makes It: Finally, you should moisturise your lips like a maniac if you're planning on wearing bold lip colours. A good lip balm after exfoliation will help your lips stay flake-free and will also provide a base for your lipstick.

I'm obsessive about lip balm and keep one on my work desk, copious amounts in my handbag and gym bag, one by my bed and one on my desk. However, my favourite pre-lipstick salve is my Eos lip balm in Lemon Drop.

  5. You honestly read my mind with this post. Sometimes I find bright colours (impassioned, girl about town etc) stain my lips do you find exfoliating first prevents this? Xx

  6. @owwy You can order from beautyemporium.ie!

@NiamhO Possibly but, lipsticks stain my lips all the time. It seems pretty unavoidable when they are dark/bright/highly pigmented!
