Review: Bourjois Effet Smoky Eye Pencil

A decent pencil liner is a must in any make-up arsenal. If Cleopatra is anything to go by, ladies have been lining their eyes with black since ancient times (although I wouldn't suggest using lead like she did).  Black liner suits virtually anyone, and eyeliner of the kohl pencil variety is particularly useful and multi-purpose. It can be smudged all over the lid for a quick smokey eye or to act as a base for eyeshadow.

I snappped this up in Boots a few weeks back after swatching it. It's a really well-formulated, soft pencil, and the shade is a true jet black. The quality is so good that it immediately reminded me of MAC's famous Smoulder eye pencil, and at €7.99, it's a bit of a no-brainer. It also comes with a little smudger brush on the other end which is handy.

I did encounter one really annoying problem with this pencil - you have to be extremely careful when sharpening it. Now this may have been because I had temporarily mislaid my trusty Essence sharpener, but it took me bloody ages to get it properly sharp without the kohl breaking off and getting stuck in the end of my sharpener - grrr! This also resulted in a huge amount of waste - my pencil was soon nearly half its original size and I'd only used it about three times. Super annoying, but if you're careful this won't happen.

In terms of lasting power I also thought this was excellent for a kohl pencil. It's important to note that this is a soft kohl and not a waterproof liner such as the Urban Decay 24/7 Liners or Make-up For Ever Aqua Liners. Therefore it is more 'smudgey' and not quite as lasting, but the effect is really pretty. If you want this pencil to go the extra mile, a great tip is to add some matte black eyeshadow (such as MAC Carbon) on top using an angled brush.

My overall opinion is that this is a really great pencil for a fair price and I will be repurchasing this rather than investing in MAC Smoulder!

  1. I had the same problem with the pencil.. it really does a good job but due to its fragileness I can't take with me when I go to out etc. which is quite sad.
