Dee's Skincare Routine: Combination Skin

Over the years, I've had endless trouble with my skin. Acne has plagued me on and off for years and the subsequent scarring also really bothers me. I've tried endless products and was even put on antibiotics for my acne at the age of sixteen.

To be perfectly honest, I can't remember the last time I stepped out of the house without foundation and concealer on, but I do feel that my skin has settled somewhat now that I'm in my twenties - here's hoping it'll stay that way! I would label my skin as combination, but recent posts from Amy have had me doubting myself!

My skincare routine as it stands:

Cetaphil is the best cleanser I have ever used - it is gentle and creamy but won't block pores and calms skin if it is irritated. I use this on a cotton pad along with Simple eye make-up remover to get rid of everything!

I'm currently using up 3 different face washes - bold, I know. If you have spots, the best and most basic thing you can do is keep your face as clean as possible! I'd recommend any of these three:

Johnson's Face Care oil balancing gel wash - this is lovely, gentle stuff with pink beads that burst as the wash foams up. Best of all, it's only a fiver, smells nice and is widely available. I plan on repurchasing this!

Neutrogena Visibly Clear pink grapefruit daily scrub - everyone's heard of this one! My verdict is that it is nice - not too harsh and smells delicious.

Vichy NormaDerm purifying cleansing gel - this stuff takes a while to foam up but I really like it, it leaves my face feeling really clean and not stripped of moisture.

After washing my face I use a toner but I will skip this step if my skin feels tight or dry. My absolute favourite is Effaclar by La Roche-Posay.

For moisturiser, I'm currently switching between Effaclar M by La Roche-Posay and Vichy Normaderm Tri-Activ. Both are great for mattifying the skin before applying makeup but the Vichy one is particularly amazing. It has really improved the texture of my skin and I'm not afraid of it blocking my pores if I apply it at night, which is a great plus for winter time!

For spots, my favourite cream is Quinoderm acne cream. It is very harsh and you have to be careful of it drying your skin out, but it really works. For extreme breakouts I would also recommend the Quinoderm facial wash.

I've also recently started using eye cream - thankfully I don't suffer from dark circles (apart from hangover-related ones) but it is important to look after the area nonetheless! I use Clinique Repairwear intensive eye cream and also the Vichy Aqualia Thermal roll-on.

Hopefully this will be helpful - I am no expert and of course skin care is very personal and subjective, so don't take what I say as gospel!

PS- My friend Blathnaid just linked me to a great video that is a must-see for anyone with this skin type. Lisa Eldridge is definitely a woman who knows what she is talking about!
